Healthy Change for a More Sustainable World

When hospitals are run well, everyone wins…especially the patients. With that thought in mind, three non-profit health organizations—Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), the Center for Health Design and Practice Greenhealth—created the Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI) whose mission is to help hospitals become safer, healthier and more sustainable. In other words—we couldn’t wait to work with them. We began by developing their logo and brand identity, ensuring that HHI had a consistent, uniform feel throughout their materials. Then we got down to the nitty-gritty, working with HHI to create six interactive digital guides covering topics like Waste, Safer Chemicals, Energy Efficiency and Smarter Purchasing. The guides are intuitive and straightforward, enabling users to move at their own pace; they simply pick a guide to start with and check off tasks (or challenges) as they complete them. Challenges range from swapping out incandescent bulbs for LED bulbs to ending the use of certain chemicals to serving healthier, locally grown foods in the cafeteria. Changes like these are a major force for good but can be difficult to enact, so the challenges are designed to be implemented gradually and completed at a manageable pace. With 500 hospitals on board and counting, HHI is well on its way to leading communities to a healthier future.
